Nearly a week after Aaron Rodgers was sacked four times by the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football, the Green Bay Packers have signed guard/center Cecil Newton to the practice squad with the offensive line already showing signs of wear and tear this season.
Normally, a practice squad signing wouldn’t qualify as newsworthy, but this time around, Cecil Newton’s sibling connection to Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Cam Newton has fans talking. After playing college ball at Tennessee State, Newton has played for two NFL teams already in his young career, but has failed to start for each.
Both the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints have experimented with Newton, but decided to pass. At this time it is unlikely that Newton starts with the Packers this season, but whether or not this another case of Ted Thompson knowing something that we all don’t, remains to be seen.
