ESPN’s Jonathan Coachman called Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers a “future Hall of Famer” on SportsCenter when referencing the signal caller’s 93 yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson on Sunday against the woeful St. Louis Rams.
That begs the question: Is Rodgers destined to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio upon retirement?
The former California Golden Bear is no longer under oft-retired quarterback Brett Favre’s shadow, and has proven himself to be among the elite players in the NFL today. However, does Rodgers’ resume warrant an election into the Hall of Fame?
Rodgers has won one Super Bowl, received a Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award, and became the only quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in each of his first two years as a starter, in his short four season tenure as an NFL starting quarterback, an extremely impressive resume considering Rodgers has been a starter for such a brief period.
Rodgers is 27 years old, meaning that he most likely has about 7-9 years left of solid performance, assuming he stays healthy over this period. That is a plethora of time for number 12 to garner a Hall of Fame worthy career.
If he ends up winning one or two more Lombardi Trophies in his playing days, which is quite possible considering Green Bay is an extremely high caliber team and that Rodgers is partly responsible for one of the greatest Super Bowl runs in NFL history, when the team fell victim to a bevy of injuries, and yet still managed to hoist the trophy named after the Packers legendary coach, it is quite feasible that Aaron Rodgers could become a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
