Left tackle Duane Brown and the Houston Texans agreed on a contract extension Thursday that will keep Brown protecting QB Matt Schaub‘s backside for at least the next six years. The contract is worth $54.3 million with $22 million guaranteed.

Brown is 26 years old and started all 16 games last season while being selected as a second-team All-Pro. He is 6’4″ and 320 pounds with the ability to move fairly quickly in order to block those speedy edge rushers.

Brown only allowed two sacks last season, which tied for the best in the AFC and he received no holding penalties. The Texans feel that Brown was a huge part as to why the team was ranked second in the league with 2,448 yards rushing, a franchise record.

Brown started all 60 games that he has appeared in at left tackle since the Texans selected him with the 26th overall pick out of Virginia Tech in the 2008 NFL Draft. Houston has ranked in the top four in total offense and produced a 1,000-yard rusher in three out of Brown’s first four seasons with the franchise.

This seems to be a smart move for the team as Brown is obviously a huge part of the passing and rushing game for the Texans. The Texans seem to think he is still improving from day to day and that he will soon be among the elite at the position.
