Leandro Barbosa Shines in Debut with Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers and the Los Angeles Clippers have nearly identical records this season. The Clippers’ 26-19 record is their best start in 47 years. Indiana’s 26-18 record is their best start since 2004. Both young teams have overachieved this season, and could be a force to reckon with for several years to come. The Clippers are currently fourth in the Western Conference playoff standings, and Indiana is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference.
Just before the trade deadline, the Pacers traded a second-round draft pick for veteran guard Leandro Barbosa. Barbosa saw his first action for Indiana on Tuesday night against the Clippers. Coming off the bench, Barbosa added 12 points in just over 18 minutes of play. The new scoring option seemed to spark an Indiana bench that put up 52 points during the 102-89 win over the Clippers.
The game, which saw six lead changes and nine ties, was tied at 62-62 in the third quarter. Indiana went on an 11-0 run, and held off a few Clippers comeback attempts. A big difference in the game was made at the free throw line. The Pacers shot 24-26 from the line, while the Clippers hit only 9-20 foul shots. Indiana’s free throw percentage was 92.3%, while Los Angeles shot only 45% from the foul line in the loss.
On Thursday night, Indiana begins their second stretch of three games in three nights. The Pacers will also play five games over the next seven days. Indiana’s upcoming back-to-back-to-back games this weekend are all against teams with a record of .500 or less.
