Kansas City Chiefs Finally In Discussion About Colts QB Peyton Manning

The Kansas City Chiefs are finally into the discussion of possible landing places for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.  It was noted here last week that, whatever one thinks is an appropriate price tag for the injured quarterback, Kansas as City meets all the prerequisites one would assume are in place for Peyton’s next stop.

It was no less than Chiefs’ head coach Romeo Crennel who invited the discussion. The coach did nothing more than say the obvious, which is that if (emphasis added) Manning were available, that Crennel would be crazy not to look at him. But in the world of the media there is no such thing as merely stating the obvious and head coaches know that.

I don’t claim any special insights into the workings of the Kansas City front office, but I think a reasonable observation is that Crennel is not someone who’s accustomed to just letting fly with whatever’s on his mind. Which is why I give his comments much greater significance than I do for New York Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan, who’s said the exact same thing. Ryan was almost surely shooting from the lip. I don’t see Crennel doing the same.

If Crennel is not just thinking out loud, then we can safely assume that serious discussions have taken place within the Chief organization—and perhaps with Indianapolis—about what it would take to acquire Manning. The Indianapolis front office can make the whole discussion a lot easier by just refusing to pay Manning the $28 million bonus he’s owed by March 8 and make him a free agent. Then it’s just about money.

But what if the Colts’ decide to keep Manning and trade him? It’s also just as likely that potential suitors might prefer to do a trade rather than risk the quarterback hitting the open market where all bets would be off. Kansas City has the 11th or 12th pick in the NFL draft (pending a coin flip with Seattle) and it’s worth giving up that spot to get Manning. Is it worth giving up next year’s first round pick? And maybe the year after, or a player of comparable worth?

I suppose I would lean toward giving up a second first-round pick, but a third crosses the line and under no circumstances would I give up a current player. The whole point behind getting Manning in Kansas City is that a team that went 7-9 last year and has Eric Berry, Tony Moeaki and Jamaal Charles all coming back from the injured list is well poised to make a Super Bowl run, if only they get a quarterback. It makes no sense to get the quarterback, but give up pieces of the puzzle.

Two first-round picks are the maximum Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli should give up to get Manning.

Give up a high 1st round pick for two years of QB play? It wasn’t worth it for Montana. It knocked the organization off its charted course and led to a two decade infatuation with picking up other team’s table scraps to play QB.

Can the Chiefs please draft and groom their own franchise QB? We haven’t even TRIED in 30-years. That’s right, 30-years…
