The Kansas City Chiefs Have Depth Concerns In The Secondary

The Kansas City Chiefs dodged a bullet when cornerback Brandon Flowers’ foot injury proved to be nothing serious, but the coaching staff is very aware that it pointed to a problem the team has, and that’s depth in the secondary.

Kansas City brought nineteen defensive backs to St. Joseph’s for training camp, more than any other position. In spite of that, Flowers’ spot in drills is being taken by a safety, Travis Daniels. If this were a game, and not just practice drills it would be something to be concerned about.

But it’s more than just what happens in the event of an injury. Kansas City plays in a division where all three rivals are going to challenge them through the air. The San Diego Chargers have Philip Rivers pulling the trigger. The Oakland Raiders will get to run their offense with Carson Palmer right from the start of camp rather than adjusting on the fly like they did a year ago. And maybe you heard about the Denver Broncos signing a guy named Peyton Manning in the offseason. Then throw in the fact that Kansas City plays the New Orleans Saints, with Drew Brees at quarterback, and you have a schedule that’s going to demand high-caliber secondary play.

The nickel and dime packages are going to have to be effective in these situations, and that means even with a healthy Flowers, backup defensive backs have to step up. Javier Arenas is the nickel back and Daniels will get his opportunity to play regardless of injuries. Both are going to be important to Kansas City’s defensive success, so the chance for more practice reps with Flowers out is probably one of the good things that an NFL team can bring from a minor injury.

One Rant to “The Kansas City Chiefs Have Depth Concerns In The ...”

  1. ron says:

what a load of garbage. they are stacked with depth. safety is the one spot lacking.

db’s: flowers/routt. Arenas, Brown are both highly thought of, daniels can step in when needed. menzie can play both spots and is a rookie
    S. Berry/Lewis A.Elam started 16 games last year in dallas, now is kc’s 3rd safety, menzie also goes here, KC has other options here as well

this is just not true. kc’s depth issue is at ILB with siler injured constantly, and at tight end with oconnell a fringe 3. an argument can be made at fullback but they hardly use one

    not on point
