One of the reasons for the Angels slow start to this season has been the lack of bullpen depth on the team. To help address that problem the Angels traded for right handed relief pitcher Ernesto Frieri from the San Diego Padres. To get him the Angels had to give up top prospect Alexi Amarista, and minor league starting pitcher Donn Roach.

Frieri, will join the team today, and should immediately step into a big role in the struggling Angels bullpen. He has pitched very well for the San Diego Padres this season. In 11.2 innings he has 18 strike outs, and a 2.31 earned run average. With his high strike out ratio Frieri is a great candidate to be a set up man, or even challenge for the closer role if Scott Downs shows he is not capable of handling the job. Downs was made the teams closer last week as Jordan Walden has struggled early in this season.

Before the Angels add Frieri to the team they need to send down another relief pitcher today. The 2 most likely players to be sent down would be either Kevin Jepsen, or David Carpenter.

Amarista, who made the team out of spring training, never really had a spot for at bats with the team, and seemed expendable when they already have players like Maicer Izturis, and Alberto Callaspo who can play the same positions as him, and have more experience.

Roach is off to a great start this season in single A Inland Empire, with a 5-0 record, and a 2.16 ERA in 6 starts.
