David Kahn Needs to Go

After a three day gap with no internet, I am back with a vengeance.  The topic of David Kahn is an interesting one.  You love him as long as he’s not in charge of your team.  He provides humor for everyone else in the basketball world.  Since this a Timberwolves blog, I need to say what everyone has been saying for a long time:  David Kahn needs to go.

Kahn makes me feel like I could be a decent NBA general manager.  His moves defy logic and reason.  Remember the NBA Draft in 2009?  Kahn managed to take THREE point guards in the first round.  He traded one that night (Ty Lawson), one this off-season (Jonny Flynn), and the one he held onto is going to have to adjust after coming over from Europe (Ricky Rubio).  He once infuriated Chris Webber by comparing him to NBA bust Darko Millic.  He gave Darko a contract that was well above his production.  Time and time again Kahn provides fodder for critics everywhere.

The sad thing is, Kahn comes off as quite likable.  He seems like a nice enough guy, but he’s in over his head.  He can’t handle a simple coaching search.  Poor Kurt Rambis had to wait two months into the off-season before being fired.  Most NBA teams have already solved their coaching openings.  Kahn isn’t anywhere close to hiring a new coach.  Since it’s a lockout, a coach doesn’t have an effect right now.  However, it shows a front office that is out of touch with the rest of the NBA world.

Somehow Kahn has managed to construct a team full of talent.  This team looks to be on the verge of a breakout.  There are numerous potential superstars including Michael Beasley, Ricky Rubio, Kevin Love, and Anthony Randolph.  A return to the playoffs seems inevitable.  However, it should be without Kahn.  There is no guarantee that he doesn’t screw this up.  He could trade Beasley too soon, or screw up the coaching hire.  His track record doesn’t project any long-term success.  Kahn would make a fantastic analyst, but a good GM he is not.  It’s time for him to hit the road and bring relief to Minnesota fans everywhere.
