UFC 137: What to do after Georges St. Pierre has pulled out?

Dana White just keeps finding himself with scuttled main events, as Georges St. Pierre injured his knee in training this week.  While it is not a very serious injury, GSP will be unable to main event UFC 137 next week against Carlos Condit.  BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz has been promoted to the main event, which is ironic considering that Diaz was booted off the main event due to his mental instability.  The event poster makers have gotten a workout.

Since the injury is not serious, GSP vs Condit will be postponed and Condit will not fight someone else while waiting for GSP to recover.  This leaves the UFC 137 card down a fight, and GSP is the 2nd best box office draw the UFC has.  Over much of 2011, the UFC has been struggling to hit 400k PPV buys, which was almost never a problem in 2010 or 2009.  The last event is trending at 250k despite it featuring 2 title fights and generally being a solidly entertaining night of fights.  Losing GSP for the rest of the year puts a serious dent in revenue.  This card could use another fight between some name guys to help the flagging PPV buys.

Josh Koscheck has a reputation for jumping in on short notice and offered his services once again.  Here’s a proposal: Thiago Alves is supposed to welcome Papy Abedi to the UFC at the UFC 138 Europe event that is 1 week after UFC 137.  Abedi is highly touted, but it seems to be pushing him a bit too far by having him fight Alves.  Alves defeated Koscheck previously to get a title shot against GSP.  Why not have them fight again?  Alves is training for a fight in the same timeline, and Kos will fight anyone (except teammates of course).  Abedi can fight someone of a similar experience level.  UFC 138 is not going to be a PPV event anyway, so why not give 137 a bit of a bump?  A price reduction for this event should also be considered- losing your most popular champion greatly reduces the number of people who would pay the same price for an event.

What a stagnant year for the UFC. If Brock leaves, they’ll have no one capable of doing 1 million, or probably 900k PPV buys. Even 2 title fights on 1 card can’t hit 500k+ unless GSP is there.
