Georgia Bulldogs’ Hutson Mason’s Confidence Rises with Throwing Game
Quarterback Hutson Mason has three interceptions on the season. While that doesn’t seem like a bad number, he has only thrown the ball a scant few times. The Georgia Bulldogs‘ offense is based off its running game; so far it has been working and running back Todd Gurley has been king of the Georgia gridiron with his success. But with wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell back on the field itching for playing time, Mason has been feeling the pressure to throw far and accurately. During the Bulldogs’ game against the Vanderbilt Commodores, Mason passed for 121 yards, two of which ended up being touchdowns. After this game, Mason will be expected to up his throwing game.
The game against Vanderbilt is proof Mason actually can throw, and throw well. He wasn’t as predictable and wasn’t blatantly honing in on players down the field. Mitchell’s return seemed to have forced the senior quarterback and offensive coaches into opening their options. Whatever the coaches did during practice throughout the week worked, and Mason was faster and crisper than he was from past games while passing the ball.
With those affirmations, he has now found some confidence. His 44-yard touchdown pass to Chris Conley was a thing a beauty. While congratulations were being rained down on the wide receiver, Mason received more pats on the back and whoops of joy. Even though Mitchell saw limited playing time against Vanderbilt, he still garnered a first down off Mason’s arm. Conley saw the most action from Mason’s throwing game, and it benefited the Bulldogs greatly.
Much more will be expected of Mason in the coming games, especially against the SEC teams. If he repeats his performance from Week 6, UGA will continue to win. With this boost of assurance, Mason will be sure to add more passes to the offensive books. If he can pepper the usual rushing plays with longer passes, Georgia will have a truly rounded and strong offense.
