5 Bold Predictions For Notre Dame vs. North Carolina

This looked like an extremely tough "trap" game for Notre Dame before the season. North Carolina was ranked preseason and the game is sandwiched in between Stanford and Florida State matchups. Here are five bold predictions.

5. Ben Koyack Will Have A Bigger Impact

Koyack was once a prized tight end recruit coming out of high school. Many fans expected him to be next in the line of great Notre Dame tight ends following Tyler Eifert, Kyle Rudolph, John Carlson and Anthony Fasano. On fourth-and-11 last week against Stanford, Koyack caught the game-winning touchdown pass to preserve the undefeated season for Notre Dame.

4. Jaylon Smith Will Be The Best Player On The Field

Smith had 14 tackles last week against a team that has made four straight BCS bowl games. This week he gets to face an inferior opponent in the Tar Heels. North Carolina doesn't have anyone nearly as fast or strong as Smith.

3, Former UNC Commit Everett Golson Will Be at His Best

Golson originally committed to North Carolina and actually talked to Roy Williams about playing basketball too. Golson played at Myrtle Beach High School in South Carolina and is familiar with many players on the UNC team. As long as the rain stays away from Notre Dame Stadium, expect Golson's receivers to play better than they did against the best defense in the nation last week in Stanford.

2. Due To Notre Dame's Dominant Defense, The Under Will Win In Vegas

The MGM Mirage in Las Vegas has set the over/under for Notre Dame vs. North Carolina at 65. Notre Dame's defense has not given up more than 17 points all year, and the offensive line has proven it can't open up holes for the Irish backs consistently. Everett Golson has been making enough throws for the Irish to score 40 a game, but turnovers and drops have prevented the team from being more explosive.

1. Notre Dame Will Beat North Carolina 41-17

North Carolina began the season ranked No. 23 in both polls. The Tar Heels are now 2-3 after three consecutive losses to East Carolina, Clemson and Virginia Tech. Notre Dame is confident after beating Stanford, but Brian Kelly is good at making sure his team doesn't get too cocky. He understands how to navigate a team to an undefeated season by focusing on the day-to-day process. The Irish win this one easily.

Phantom Offsides Penalty Costs North Carolina

Twitter

Twitter

All season long, we’ve been hearing about how bad the officiating has been in the NFL. On Saturday night, we saw how much damage bad calls can do in college football as well.

During the ACC title game, the North Carolina Tar Heels were making one final push to steal the crown from the Clemson Tigers. After scoring a quick touchdown in the waning minutes of the game, the Tar Heels lined up for an onside kick — and recovered it after a few Tigers mishandled the ball. However, a flag came flying in for an offsides penalty. The only problem was that no Tar Heel was offsides.

Just look for yourself:

Am I missing something, or were there zero Tar Heels offsides on that play?

The closest player was still about two yards from the line. Obviously a recovery wouldn’t have guaranteed a North Carolina touchdown, but it certainly kept them from getting the opportunity they earned.

The Tigers recovered the next onside kick, and ran out the clock, securing the ACC crown and a spot in the 2015 College Football Playoff.

The ACC title came down to a phantom offsides call that cost North Carolina big.
