Much has not been said lately of Nebraska’s recruiting needs, especially after a summer in which multiple quarterbacks either left the team, transferred, or decided to play baseball (for those fans who live in the area, how about a Storm Chasers game when Bubba gets there and make a GO BIG RED cheer?). But the Huskers are also lacking in other positions where up and coming talent is needed.
Cornerback is not a position with a depth problem, but a position in which there needs to be someone to step up. The Pelini brothers have thrown multiple players into the fire this year, and all have had their moments. There have been times where they have been completely lacking. One big need for the Huskers is someone to fill in once Dennard leaves.
The linebackers is also a position of depth, but not of experience behind Compton, David, and Fisher. Trevor Roach played well, but we have not seen much of him since. The linebackers and experience will be necessary when graduation rolls around, and we have to break in quite a few new linebackers.
Quarterback may be the biggest depth concert. Behind Taylor Martinez is Brion Carnes, a freshmen. Jamal Turner was moved to receiver after we thought we had Bubba. Then Green and Spano left. Suddenly, depth has become a problem. Nebraska’s offense is built around speed, but the Huskers need to find someone who can throw the ball well. A Joe Ganz type player comes to mind, one who can throw the ball with anyone, and has enough speed that he has to be respected.
Nebraska may also want to find some big receivers. No offense to Jamal Turner, but he is not the biggest player in the world. I’m talking more like Maurice Purify size, the 6-3, 215 lb receivers who are physical and can move defenders.
Nebraska has some great depth, and emerging players, but they will need to continue to recruit the states of Florida, Ohio, Texas, and California well if they expect to compete.
