He’s too small; he can’t handle the B1G 10. He’s not a prototypical linebacker. Expect him to get run over by the Montee Ball’s and Silas Redd’s of the conference, the big running backs.

Whose talking now?

Lavonte David continues to prove the early season doubters wrong. Penn State was driving late in the game against Nebraska, and had a 4th & 1 with 1:49 left in the game. Silas Redd has been one of the best running backs in the conference all year long, so Penn State would naturally hand it off to him.

As he rumbled to the line, he met a man determined to not let that happen. Lavonte David met him head on, stood him up, and then pushed him back. Penn State was not even close to getting a first down, and the Huskers would take over with a chance to finish the game.

In 10 games so far this season, David leads the Huskers with 97 tackles. He also has 2 sacks, 2 interceptions, a forced fumble, and a recovered fumble to go along with that. Not bad for a guy who many doubted could handle the rigors of the B1G 10.

He’s also put Nebraska on his back and lead them to two victories. He single handedly stuffed Redd, preserving the victory in this game. There was also the strip of Braxton Miller that got an anemic offense going versus Ohio State. Though Nebraska wound up losing that game, David had two huge sacks early in that game on Russell Wilson, on third down, to give his team the ball.

So why not give him the B1G 10 Defensive Player of the Year Award?

Lavonte is not the only one who is deserving of this award, but who has meant more to his team? Devon Still has been a force inside, but I wouldn’t give it to him. William Gholston has also had a great season for Michigan State, but everyone is going to remember the punch, and subsequent suspension.

Lavonte David has meant more to this defense than just about anyone. With Alfonzo Dennard returning, Lavonte has been able to do things he wasn’t able to do earlier this year. No longer can teams continue to throw the ball over the field, and they continue to pound the ball versus a small defensive line. David recorded his fourth double digit tackles in a game this season.

Lavonte David, B1G 10 Defensive Player of the Year. Has a nice ring, doesn’t it?
