The New Orleans Saints have lost linebacker Chris Chamberlain for the season with a torn ACL. Chamberlain tweeted Saturday morning and confirmed what many Saints fans were fearing.

Definitely been feeling the love of my friends, family, and the #WHODATNATION! Unfortunately my season is over but working for 2013 begins!

Right after a Saints turnover, Chamberlain’s injury occurred during the second quarter on the first play. It was obvious that after Jacksonville Jaguars running back Montell Owens was stopped after a two-yard gain and Chamberlain went down immediately, that he was in pain. After a couple of minutes of being down on the field in agonizing pain, Chamberlain was helped off the field.

Chamberlain spent the past four-years playing for the St. Louis Rams and the last three seasons were played under Steve Spagnuolo, who is now the Saints defensive coordinator.

It’s going to be really hard for the Saints to fill the void of not having Chamberlain on the field. He’s a player that really mastered the Spagnuolo defensive system.  Not only has Chamberlain been playing the role of middle linebacker, but he’s also aided the Saints special teams units.

Problems for Saints on the defensive side of the ball just keep getting harder. It seems that position is a revolving door and Coach Joe Vitt just can’t seem to get a constant player. The only option that I can see Vitt going with is Ramon Humber, who just re-signed with the Saints last week.

Saying that the Saints coaching staff is wishing they had Jonathan Vilma right now is an understatement. One thing they need is consistency on defense and right now that’s the last thing they do have. While you can always count on Drew Brees handling the offense, the Saints will still need to stop other teams from moving the ball up and down the field.

While this is still the preseason, it is the time most teams do their assessments. Safe to say the Saints will be focusing on their defense more than anything in the coming weeks. If all else fails, they still have a stud in Curtis Lofton but even he won’t be enough to hold down the fort until Vilma gets back.
