Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

The last thing that fans of the New York Giants want to hear is anything concerning injuries to top defensive players. It sounds like a broken record when talking about it now, considering the team has suffered major injuries like crazy in recent years, but thankfully this latest news does not appear to be serious in nature. Jason Pierre-Paul, who had 16.5 sacks and led all defensive linemen with 86 tackles in 2011, will miss this Friday’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

“He is not going to play in this game in all likelihood,” Tom Coughlin said. “I just think it will end up being precautionary based on what we had to do today by not letting him work.”

Giants fans do not want to hear this, but the young defensive end has been through this before. Big Blue’s defense is built around their ferocious pass rush, so if they miss some time in the regular season it could hurt.

The backups will be getting a ton of playing time this Friday. Will Beatty (back), Michael Boley (hamstring), Adrian Tracy (hamstring), Jayron Hosley (back) and Marvin Austin (back) will all miss the game. Shaun Rogers (blood clot) and Terrell Thomas (knee) remain sidelined indefinitely and Chris Canty and Travis Beckum are still on the PUP.

It will be interesting to see whether not Hakeem Nicks plays in the game. He resumed practice last week and is progressing along better than anyone could have expected. I wouldn’t hold my breath, but he could start the game.
