New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul will not play Friday against the Chicago Bears due to back spasms.  “I think it will end up being precautionary based on what we had to do today, not letting him work,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “He would have practiced and played, but the medical people said this is the best way to go, so that we ensure going forward that he’s going to be okay.”  Pierre-Paul has never missed a regular season or postseason game, but has missed three preseason games since coming into the NFL two years ago.  One of those preseason games he sat out was because the 2011 preseason finale against the New England Patriots occurred only three days after a game with the New York Jets due to Hurricane Irene.

The Giants must play it smart with their star players. There is no reason to push them and risk further injury, especially to Pierre-Paul who led the team with 16.5 sacks last season and was named an All-Pro.

Osi Umenyiora will most likely start in Pierre-Paul’s place on Friday. He will be lining up opposite of Justin Tuck who will man his customary left side.  So far this preseason, Pierre-Paul has four tackles including two sacks, both of which came against the Jets last weekend.

With preseason not being of much importance it is not worth any player to play while hurt. Sitting Pierre-Paul is strictly a precautionary measure on the advice of the Giants medical staff. He is expected to be ready for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
