Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Giants got many of their cuts done early Friday morning and out of the way. With teams having to get down to 53 today, the Giants wasted no time releasing several players, including a few who many thought might make the roster.

Linebacker Greg Jones, who appeared in every game last year and was expected to be a special teams contributor at the very least this season, was a surprising release by the Giants this morning. Injuries to other positions could have influenced the decision, but you can expect another team to jump on Jones before next week’s opening games.

Also released was backup running back D.J. Ware, who started the off-season as the primary backup to Ahmad Bradshaw and was beat out by David Wilson, Andre Brown and Da’Rel Scott. It was not surprising to see Ware cut if you watched the final two preseason games. Ware had all but been phased out by Brown and Scott, and each of the latter had good games against the New England Patriots on Wednesday.

It is terrific to see Brown catch on if that is in fact the case. He was a fourth round pick in 2009 who suffered a serious Achilles tear in his rookie year. The Giants released him the following year and he bounced around the league before ending up on the Giants’ practice squad in 2011.

Scott likely gets the nod over Ware due to his contributions on special teams. He can be a kick returner and also is great on punt coverage. He blocked a punt against the Chicago Bears in the preseason.

The Giants have also released receivers Isaiah Stanback, Dan DePalma and David Douglas, tight end Larry Donnell, offensive lineman Selvish Capers and 2012 sixth round pick Matt McCants, defensive ends Matt Broha and Craig Marshall, defensive tackles Marcus Thomas and Dwayne Hendricks and linebacker Jake Muasau.

Tyler Sash was placed on the reserve/suspended list and Bruce Johnson was placed on injured reserve. By my count that takes care of 15 cuts. They are not done yet. They got down to 75 on Monday so they still have seven cuts to make.

If DePalma, Douglas, McCants and Broha clear waivers, I imagine they’ll be added to the practice squad. Check back later for the final roster.
