2012 NFL Free Agency: New York Jets Sign SS LaRon Landry to a One-Year, $4 Million Deal
The New York Jets have upgraded their secondary, coming to terms on Monday with former Washington Redskins safety LaRon Landry on a one-year deal worth $4 million.
The Jets had also been pursuing Reggie Nelson, who late Sunday night spurned the Jets and re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on a four-year contract.
Landry is a hard-hitting strong safety who’s been a productive player since he was drafted 6th overall in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Redskins, although he’s had a tough time staying on the field.
He has not played a full 16-game season since 2008 due to various injuries, and was only able to play 17 games over the last two seasons combined. But when he’s been on the field, he’s been a beast.
Landry can be a versatile option for the Jets, able to play down in the box like Eric Smith but with more athleticism and ability to cover far better than Smith has ever been able to.
It’s another low-risk, high-reward signing for the Jets. Like receiver Chaz Schilens, the Jets are making a minimal commitment both in years and dollars, and could be getting a solid player.
If LaRon Landry can stay on the field, he instantly upgrades the safety position for the Jets, and likely moves Eric Smith back to a sub-package role on defense.
The Jets still need to improve the free safety position, but with Nelson out of the picture, they’ll probably have to address in via the draft in April.
All in all, it’s a solid signing for New York. For a player of Landry’s caliber, it will be a steal if he can stay healthy. However, if recent history is any indication, that could be a big “if.”
