New York Jets Hope for Breakout Season from Aaron Maybin in 2012
New York Jets linebacker Aaron Maybin has his fair share of doubters.
The former Penn State Nittany Lion was a highly-touted, highly-paid, highly-drafted talent when he entered the NFL in 2009.
The Buffalo Bills made Maybin the 11th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, and he was the textbook case of a draft bust after two utterly unproductive seasons up north.
Having failed to even record a single sack in his Bills career, Buffalo cut bait with him, and Maybin’s NFL future was in doubt.
Rex Ryan and the Jets took a flier on him in 2011, and a humbled Aaron Maybin rewarded that faith with 6 sacks to lead the team, showing flashes of that talent that earned him the nickname “Mayhem.”
Maybin brings pure speed and a non-stop motor to the table, and his athleticism was something the Jets had been sorely lacking from their pass rush for years.
“I’ve always been a high energy guy,” said Maybin. “That’s how I’ve always played the game.”
Now 24 years old, in his second season in New York, the young pass rusher is aiming to become a more complete player and earn more playing time. He doesn’t want to be just as a third-down speed rush specialist.
He’s bulked up to 245 lbs this year, which he hopes will give him a combination of strength and speed that will force the coaches to get him on the field more, and keep him there.
For the first time in his career, he’s all but officially assured of a roster spot and a role on defense, but that’s not stopping Aaron Maybin from continuing to go 100 mph on every single play, practice or otherwise.
“I got something to prove every day,” he said. That’s not going to change.”
