I have not discussed it much here – if at all – but 2011 was the last season on GM Brian Cashman’s contract.  Brian Cashman has been the New York Yankees’ GM since 1998 and has played a large role in the New York Yankees’ continued success into our current decade.  According to Buster Olney, talks between Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees are going well in the early going.

I would love to see Cashman back with the Yankees.  While nowhere close to perfect, Cashman is terribly underrated in my eyes.  Because of the money that the Yankees have and are willing to spend, everyone disregards his success as a given.  Maybe it’s fair, maybe it’s not, but for the same reason, his mistakes are weighted more heavily than other general managers around the league.

My favorite thing about Cashman is the way he has been able to maintain a World Series caliber club at the big league level while building one of the top farm systems in the game.  Money certainly helps, but even with the largest pockets in the game the challenge of winning and rebuilding is still substantial.

A lot of focus, justifiably, is on the New York Yankees and CC Sabathia coming to terms on a new deal.  Just as important – if not more – is the return of Brian Cashman as the Yankees’ general manager.
