The Buffalo Bills have been one of the biggest surprises in the NFL through two weeks. The opportunity to reach 3-0 is something that even the most loyal Buffalo fans couldn’t have imagined. They will have their hands full this Sunday going against the San Diego Chargers, who just made the Seattle Seahawks look mortal.
The most difficult task for Buffalo will be slowing down San Diego’s offense. Philip Rivers was spectacular in Week 2 against what many people consider the best secondary in football. The Bills’ defense doesn’t have the accolades of Seattle, but they have been very impressive so far this year. However, sometimes the best way to shut down a good offense is to keep them off the field. This is especially important against the Chargers, who pride themselves in controlling the game. San Diego had the ball for just over 42 minutes against Seattle.
The key to controlling the ball is to stay on schedule with the down and distance and of course converting third downs. I think this will make C.J. Spiller the X-factor for the Bills on Sunday. Spiller has had a nice start to the season after last year’s disappointment. He was far more effective than Fred Jackson last week and will be vital in terms of controlling the ball against the Chargers.
If the Bills can get Spiller established early in the game, it will take a lot of pressure off of E.J. Manuel. Despite the 2-0 start, Manuel hasn’t really looked that great. I don’t think the Bills can afford to fall behind by a lot early, which is why building an early lead on the ground will be so important.
Spiller also has the ability to change the game with one play. Last week he had a 102-yard kick return for a touchdown. It was a huge play in the game, giving the Bills a 16-3 lead. I wouldn’t expect another return touchdown, but Spiller has proven that he can score from anywhere on the field.
If Buffalo gets the mixture of big plays and ball control from Spiller then they will have a good chance at staying perfect on the season.
