QB Tom Brady, who will end up in the Hall of Fame, is one of the best quarterbacks of all time and can still play at a high level. New England Patriots fans should hope he stays in New England at least through his current contract, which is up after the 2017 season.
While it’s true that the Patriots and their offense have not played consistently this season due to a variety of factors, Brady is still one of the best QBs in the NFL right now. He was impressive, as was the team, against the Cincinnati Bengals, but even after that win, Brady had to squash reports that there was tension between himself and the Patriots’ coaching staff.
Whether there is tension or not, Brady himself has acknowledged that he may not finish his NFL career with the Patriots, even though he did state there is no place he would rather play than New England.
For his part, Brady said that this year is the only one that matters, which should come as a surprise to no one since he is always only concerned about the immediate future — the next game, the current season, etc. Brady may think about the long-term future, but he never seems terribly concerned about it.
A player being the best or one of the best in a particular sport does not mean they will always retire with the same team they began (or played most of) their career with. Michael Jordan had a stint where he played for the Washington Wizards, Joe Montana ended his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, and LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat … and went back to Cleveland this off season.
Brady has loved playing in New England, and Patriots fans have been spoiled to have one of the best ever quarterback their team. While he won’t always be in a Patriots uniform, fans should hope that he remains under center in New England. He is a rare combination of talent, intelligence and work ethic. Throughout his career, he has elevated the play of his teammates, which is difficult to do in football. Brady has had his rough days just like any other athlete, but fans in New England have felt confident in his ability to win any game, no matter the stakes.
He has been a model of consistency, and other than being married to possibly the most famous super model in the world, he has for the most part stayed out of the news and let his play on the field do all of the talking.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has cut/traded veterans before, and it’s safe to assume he’ll do it again. For now, Patriots fans should hope that Brady does not fall into that category and that he wants to stay in New England — even if he couldn’t be blamed for wanting to leave.
