Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta was set to have a breakout year, however a season-ending injury in Week 3 forced the Ravens to have to reformulate their offense to function without the help of Pitta. Luckily for the Ravens, tight end Owen Daniels has stepped in to not only fill a vacancy, but also give quarterback Joe Flacco another weapon for his arsenal.

The Ravens originally brought in veteran tight end Owen Daniels this past offseason to complement Dennis Pitta as well as provide a veteran presence for Pitta and the rest of the Ravens. In the aftermath of the Pitta injury, Daniels stepped in to take over the starting tight end role and has played extremely well since.

In the four games since Pitta’s season ended, Daniels has caught 17 passes and averaged over 50 receiving yards a game. Last week, in a win against the Atlanta Falcons, Daniels had arguably his best game of the season as he reeled in a team-high six catches and a touchdown. Daniels is currently second on the Ravens in receptions (27) and tied for second with touchdowns (three).

The Ravens have been able to utilize a balanced offensive attack under offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, and Daniels has become a big part of their ability to do so. With the way he’s playing recently, Daniels’ role is set to become more and more significant within the offensive strategy as the season goes on. Receiver Steve Smith will continue to get the brunt of the receptions, and as Daniels’ continued reliability is shown, he’ll take some pressure off Smith and Baltimore’s other offensive weapons. He’s set to tie — and perhaps even break — his career high for touchdown receptions and the Ravens will be using him more and more as they go down the stretch.
