There are many University of Michigan football fans who probably wish Denard Robinson was still in college. It’s no fun to look back for Wolverine fans, but fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars may be seeing the blossoming of a star running back in the making.

The injury to Toby Gerhart and the exit of Maurice Jones-Drew to the Oakland Raiders has opened up the door for Robinson, a draft choice that was clearly chosen as a running back and not a quarterback.

Jaguars’ top brass recognized Robinson’s intrinsic value as a rusher, because that’s what he did at Michigan. His feet guided the Wolverines to many wins (and also many losses, but that’s another story). But when he went to Jacksonville, Robinson disappeared for a while.

As the Jaguars retool their offense, putting Blake Bortles in at quarterback, they appear poised to hand off the ball to Robinson as a leading rusher.

In his first six games Robinson didn’t have much to contribute. His highest total came against the Indianapolis Colts with 33 yards. His big emergence came last week when Robinson ran for 127 yards against the Cleveland Browns and followed up with a 108-yard outing on Sunday in a 24-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Look, everyone knows the Jaguars aren’t going anywhere. They’re playing for another high draft pick, but there is a sense that some positives might lie just around the corner. Bortles may not excite for now, but give him time.

The same can be said for Robinson. Give him a few more games and he may be someone to watch.
