On Sunday, the Carolina Panthers will suit up against the NFL’s worst defense in the Atlanta Falcons. An inept Falcons defense may just be the tonic that a struggling Carolina offense needs, having not put up more than 21 points in the last four weeks. With quarterback Cam Newton struggling this season and the Panthers’ offense depleted of most of its pieces save for tight end Greg Olsen, rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin has been the fulcrum of the unit. This week’s matchup against the Falcons will be no different; if Benjamin can break out in a big way and put his team up early, Carolina will walk away with a win.

Because of Atlanta’s terrible defense, Benjamin breaking out is actually pretty likely. The Falcons give up an average of 74 yards per game to opposing No. 1 wideouts. Last week, the Falcons gave up eight receptions to Tampa Bay Buccaneers No. 1 receiver Vincent Jackson, the most allowed to Jackson all season. Benjamin has proven himself to be a much more talented wideout than Jackson and surely has the capability to burn the Falcons’ secondary for multiple touchdowns, something he’s only accomplished one time this season.

If Benjamin is able to get his Panthers up early, Carolina will be in good shape. Quarterback Matt Ryan has played notably worse this season when playing from behind, having completed just 62 percent of his passes and thrown six picks. Benjamin’s performance this season thus far has been noteworthy, but now it’s time for a coming out party.
