It seems in this day and age it is hard to watch an NFL game without there being some sort of controversy, especially with the ways officials call the game. That appears to be no different after the Miami Dolphins defeated the Buffalo Bills 22-9 on Thursday Night Football.
There were numerous bogus penalties called throughout the contest, and unfortunately, way too many of them went against the Bills. Needless to say, Buffalo is incredibly furious over the botched officiating.
“I did yell because I did get held on that play. I made sure I yelled, ‘Holding.’ Whatever else came after that, I really don’t know,” said Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes in reference to a non-holding call that turned into an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against him, according to ESPN. “I don’t know. … I’ve never really seen a holding call missed at the point of attack like that. So I really don’t know. I’m at a loss for words right now.”
The hilarious part about Hughes’ debacle was that it was one of the least offensive non-calls.
Buffalo quarterback Kyle Orton received a flag for intentional grounding while in the end zone, which turned into a safety. The problem was it should not have been intentional grounding because wide receiver Sammy Watkins was in the vicinity of where the ball landed. It did not get any better when Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore was penalized for one of the worst pass interference calls you will ever see. To pour salt into the wound, Gilmore’s play on the ball was fantastic, and the referees took it away from him.
“Everybody [was] telling me it was a bull—- call,” Gilmore said, according to CBS Sports. “So it is what it is. They made it. Gotta live with it.”
It needs to be pointed out that these horrendous calls were not the reason the Bills lost the contest. The 22-9 score is evident of that. With that said, it certainly does not help when a team feels they have no shot of coming out on top because the referees are calling everything against them.
Believe it or not, that ruins a team’s confidence.
