J.J. Watt showed on Sunday that he should be in consideration for NFL MVP. He will of course get no votes for the award, and that is a travesty. Watt deserves a decent quarterback before his career is over, because he deserves to win at least one championship or MVP award.
His fading touchdown catch last weekend was a thing of beauty, and it made you wonder whether the Houston Texans would consider playing Watt on both sides of the ball. I know that is mainly a high school football tradition, but it would not be unprecedented for J.J., who initially went to college as a tight end. The Texans’ season is already over at this moment though, and so there is no point opening Watt up to injury this year. But it would not surprise me to see them use him in more offensive sets as his career progresses. No player has more of an impact on a play-to-play basis, and we should see the defensive end get at least one more TD catch before this season is over.
He will win Defensive Player of the Year without a doubt, but it will be the MVP award that eludes him until he gets over the top. Hopefully, the Texans will land a franchise QB soon either through free agency or the draft, and Watt will get to hold a Lombardi trophy. Until then, the Wisconsin Badgers alumni will stay hungry. My wish is that Brian Hoyer joins Houston and becomes the first quarterback to game manage a team to Super Bowl glory since Trent Dilfer. I know that exposing J.J. to more injury in different offensive packages is risky, but every advantage must be used when you are a small market team.
