The Chicago Bears made headlines the Monday morning following the conclusion of the NFL regular season by getting rid of general manager Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman. Both firings were warranted, as the two men are responsible for one of the most disappointing and embarrassing seasons in franchise history. Here are five candidates to replace Trestman as the next Bears’ head coach.

Mike Singletary’s stint with the San Francisco 49ers didn’t end well, but that shouldn’t prevent him from becoming the next coach for the Bears. Singletary was the heart and soul of Chicago’s stellar defense in ’85 that led to their lone Super Bowl title. It is that type of presence that could turn the franchise around after the dismal season. Reports have surfaced that Singletary is already preparing to become a head coach in 2015.

After the experiment to get an offensive-minded head coach, Chicago must get back to its roots. That means bringing in a defensive coordinator with a reputation of hard-nosed football. There is not a better overall defense in the NFL other than the Seattle Seahawks, which is where Quinn currently calls home. It’s almost a guarantee he will land his first head coaching job next season, and the Bears should be the one to get him.

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will be one of the most sought-after head coaching candidates once the playoffs are over. The Cardinals were able to stay afloat after numerous injuries due to the defense playing at an incredibly high level. Most of that has to do with what Bowles brings to the table. If Chicago is serious about improving greatly in 2015, hiring Bowles might be the biggest no-brainer on this list.

2. Mike Shanahan

Hiring Mike Shanahan might be the way to go if the Bears want to go the distance. His recent stint with the Washington Redskins was dreadful, but the reality is he’s a great coach with an impressive résumé. He would inject some much needed confidence into the team, which could lead to great success. He also might be the only person on this list who can get Jay Cutler to play at a high level. That alone is reason enough for the hire.

There is no defensive coordinator job in Rex Ryan’s future as he is set on being a head coach in 2015. Despite popular belief, Ryan is actually a phenomenal defensive-minded head coach. He just might be the exact mixture of flare, talent and no-nonsense the Bears need in order to get the franchise back on track next season. It may be one of the more obvious choices, but I can’t imagine Chicago would regret the decision.
