After two weeks of speculation, the San Francisco 49ers have finally found themselves a new head coach – and he’s been in the building the entire time. On Wednesday, the 49ers made the decision to promote defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to be their new head coach, taking over for Jim Harbaugh.

Quite simply, Tomsula was the right man for the job.

The main reason? He’s essentially the polar opposite of Harbaugh, whose abrasive demeanor and hard-nosed coaching style rubbed the 49ers front office the wrong way. Tomsula is a player’s coach who is beloved by his fellow coaches and the entire roster. The 49ers desperately need someone to rally behind, and Tomsula can be exactly that person.

While he’s far from the most noteworthy candidate whose name has been thrown around over the last two weeks, Tomsula is well known within the San Francisco organization. He served as interim head coach for one game (a win) after Mike Singletary was fired near the end of the 2010 season.

Even before then, he’s been a part of the 49ers coaching staff since 2007, serving as the defensive line coach.

It was a bit shocking the 49ers opted to go with Tomsula, who wasn’t interviewed for the position, over Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who was the only candidate to get a second interview. However, considering Tomsula’s connections with the team and status in the locker room, it’s easy to understand why the 49ers would pick him over Gase, who’s ridden the coattails of Peyton Manning’s accomplishments over the past two seasons.

Considering his rapport with the roster, experience with the team and underrated abilities as a coach, Tomsula appears to be an excellent hire (promotion) for the 49ers. Only time will tell if this is the right move for San Francisco, but the future now looks brighter in the bay.
