In what can only be described as a shock, Teddy Bridgewater has been selected by the fans as the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year, winning over the presumed favorite, Odell Beckham Jr. The Associated Press will announce their rookie of the year tomorrow.
The Minnesota Vikings first round pick showed flashes of becoming a good quarterback in the future, but his season had far less fanfare than Beckham’s. Perhaps this is a sign that NFL fans are more appreciative of the stress level and difficulty it takes to carry an NFL franchise. Quarterback is, after all, the most important position on the field.
Bridgewater was 6-8 in his 14 starts this year with a 64.4 completion percentage, 2919 yards, 14 TDs and 12 interceptions. Given the majority of rookies at his position have serious growing pains, his looks good by comparison—the Vikings have to be excited about his future. His completion percentage and passer rating were third and seventh highest in NFL history for rookies, respectively.
Beckham set all kinds of rookie and franchise records, and led the league in several receiving categories in the final 12 games of the season, but missing the first quarter of the season clearly cost him in the eyes of these fans.
