One of the biggest regrets the Miami Dolphins have is trading Wes Welker to the New England Patriots in 2007. Over the course of the seven seasons that followed, Welker established himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the game, which Miami was forced to witness twice a year. The Dolphins appear eager to right that wrong by showing interest in possibly signing Welker for the 2015 NFL season.

Welker averaged 112 receptions in the six years with New England. His 672 receptions over that span and the five consecutive seasons with at least 100 receptions are both NFL records. Ironically, Welker had five games with over 100 yards receiving against Miami during that time.

The 33-year-old has seen very little consideration from teams in free agency, with many believing he is better off retiring. However, Welker is convinced he still has plenty left in the tank, assuming he can stay free of concussions. As of right now, the Dolphins are the only team to show a legitimate seriousness in signing him.

Even though the Dolphins will not get anywhere near the production out of him they could have had if they kept him in 2007, there is plenty of reason to believe he could be a worthy asset for quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Welker’s veteran experience and stellar play as a slot receiver could do wonders for Miami’s offense, which is exactly what the Dolphins would expect from him if they decided to ink him to a short-term deal.

Miami will host Welker on a free-agent visit to help them decide if he is a right fit for the team in 2015.
