The Washington Redskins let outside linebacker Brian Orakpo hit free agency this offseason, after he was limited to seven games by the third torn pectoral of his career and had just half a sack when he was on the field last season. Multiple teams were rumored to have interest in the three-time Pro Bowler, somewhat surprisingly in my estimation, and Orakpo ultimately signed a four-year, $32 million deal ($13.5 million guaranteed) with the Tennessee Titans in March.

The Titans finished in the middle of pack with 39 sacks in 2014, but no one had more than 6.5 sacks and adding some talent to their pass rush stood out as an offseason need. Orakpo fits that bill, based on name recognition along with at least 8.5 sacks in four of his six NFL seasons, and he is the clear favorite to start over fellow offseason signing Jonathan Massaquoi at right outside linebacker for Tennessee.

Orakpo said he focused on increasing his flexibility during offseason workouts, in an effort to avoid the pectoral issues that have marred his career in recent years. During training camp and preseason games, Dick LeBeau’s hand in running Tennessee’s defense will be worth watching and Orakpo is in line to be a primary beneficiary. Apart from what he can still offer in terms of on-field production, Orakpo should be a positive influence on former first-round pick Derrick Morgan, who has mostly underachieved to this point his career (23 sacks in five seasons).

The Titans are obviously hoping full health, coupled with LeBeau’s influence on the Titans’ defense as a whole that will continue to be established during training camp, can allow Orakpo to re-establish himself as a top pass rusher this year. He is no longer in his prime, due in equal part to past injuries and age (29 at the end of this month), but if Orakpo can stay on the field I think he can absolutely have another double-digit sack season in 2015 and become a team leader for the Titans.
