It’s been a rough year for the New Orleans Saints, a team that appears headed for a rebuild this offseason. If that is the case, there’s a good chance current head coach Sean Payton could be shopped for draft picks before the 2015 campaign comes to a close.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora believes the Saints should “go ahead and start sniffing around” for a trade partner. Despite the Saints’ lack of recent success, Payton is still considered one of the better coaches in the NFL. With a number of teams expected to move on from their current coaches this offseason and not a lot of big-name coordinators likely to be available, teams will be more willing to make deals.
La Canfora mentions the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts as teams that could need a new head coach, and also notes that “draft pick return on Payton could be very substantial.”
It’s an interesting situation to keep an eye on. The Saints would obviously like to stockpile picks, and Payton’s time in New Orleans appears to be at its end. It may be best for both parties to go their separate ways, and a trade would be a beneficial way for that to happen.
