Christian Hackenberg Turns In Uneven Performance At 2016 NFL Scouting Combine

Former Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg was on display in front of 32 possible employers this weekend at the NFL Scouting Combine. He needed a strong performance to help convince doubters that he can be a franchise quarterback at the highest level.

Hackenberg stunned coaches, scouts and viewers when he registered the third-best 40-yard dash time among quarterbacks, completing the drill in 4.78 seconds. Only Louisiana Tech‘s Jeff Driskel (4.56), North Dakota State‘s Carson Wentz (4.77) and TCU‘s Trevone Boykin (4.77) ran quicker times.

Unfortunately for Hackenberg, anyone interested in Penn State’s quarterback won’t really care about his 40-time. He’ll be using his arm more often than his legs, and while he has all of the arm talent in the world, he was shaky during throwing drills over the weekend. He sailed a few throws and made his receivers work a little too hard. It’s always difficult to gauge how a prospect’s combine performance will positively or negatively affect their draft stock, but Hackenberg probably didn’t help his own cause.

The good news for the quarterback is that most scouts and coaches prefer to look at a player’s college tapes rather than their workouts. The smart ones will pay close attention to his 2013 resume under current Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien in which he was named the Big Ten‘s freshman of the year.

“I played in a pro-system my freshman year,” Hackenberg told reporters at the combine. “I understood it, picked it up really well and was able to roll with it.”

His performance under O’Brien in 2013 officially put him on the NFL’s radar as a potential first-round pick. As a freshman, he led a team crippled by sanctions to a 7-5 record. He thrived in a pro-style system which makes him an intriguing prospect when you do a contrast against his struggles under James Franklin.

As it currently stands, Hackenberg is projected to be either the fifth or sixth quarterback off the board, though it’s anyone’s guess which round that will be in. If anyone would be willing to reach, it’s definitely O’Brien. Hackenberg had an official interview with the Texans at the combine, and if I were a betting man, I would put money on him landing in Houston.

Rumors have surfaced that the Texans are interested in trading for Colin Kaepernick, but if that doesn’t materialize, O’Brien will be taking a quarterback early in the draft. Don’t expect Hackenberg to fall beyond Houston at No. 52 despite his uneven workout in Indianapolis.
