Anaheim Ducks' Corey Perry Still Has To Prove He Can Score

Anaheim Ducks alternate captain Corey Perry is often known for posting large numbers in games. His magical command of the puck has earned him the nickname of “Scorey” Perry, but until his late game-tying goal against the Florida Panthers, the forward had yet to score a goal. Expressing relief to the press after the game Perry stated, “You hope that at one point, one will bounce off you and go in. Last night, it was back door and a wide open net. Those are the things you need to happen.”

Because Perry is a team leader, his offensive play being off-base has been detrimental to the team that relies on his scoring. At this point last season he had already scored nine goals, which would eventually build to 33 in 67 games played (a phenomenal number by all accounts). I want to make clear that I am not blaming Perry for all of the Ducks’ problems; I just simply believe he has much more to prove.

Anaheim still has a chance to make the playoffs this season, but it is going to require all talent firing at full capacity. To prove himself worthy of his line position and the “A” on his uniform, Perry must start racking up large point totals again. Especially with star players like Jiri Sekac out and captain Ryan Getzlaf day-to-day because of appendicitis, the leadership falls on the veteran winger. Many teams want to see the Ducks fail, and it will be up to the big guns like Perry to fire away at the net and score.

There is no doubt that Perry has the ability to make this happen; he just needs to go out there and execute like he did against Florida.
