Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski made history on Monday night against the Denver Broncos after drilling a 63-yard field goal right before halftime–which tied former Saints kicker Tom Dempsey and former Broncos kicker Jason Elam for the longest kick in NFL history. While a moment like this is quite the accomplishment for Janikowski, the Raiders believe their beloved kicker actually has the record for himself.

According to Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Raiders plan on appealing the spot of the ball with the league–claiming that Janikowski set the record himself and drilled the field goal from 64 yards instead of 63 yards. As crazy as it sounds, Janikowski’s last-second attempt before halftime turned out to be a key factor in the game considering the Raiders went on to win the game 23-20.

Since joining the Raiders in 2000, Janikowski has always been considered to have one of the strongest legs in the NFL and even managed to drill a field goal from 61 yards in 2009. Even if the league rejects Oakland’s appeal–Janikowski will always be proud that he made a name for himself in the record books by tying the longest field goal.

  1. kevin coyle says:

I dont think he would have made it, had it not been for the thin air in Denver.

  2. John says:

“As crazy as it sounds, Janikowski’s last-second attempt before halftime turned out to be a key factor in the game considering the Raiders went on to win the game 23-20.”

A person scores a field goal and it helps the team win. Why should that sound crazy?

    • V J Hunt says:

How sadly mistaken you are, I’ll go on record now as saying that before all is said and done Janikowski will end up kicking one from 67 yards. Strongest leg ever in the game, and time will prove me right.

  3. Sports-Glory says:

What do you think 63 or 64? I say 63 yards.

  4. Maddog says:

Whether or not he set the record, that is still one helluva an accomplishment

  5. nemo says:

Why is it so hard for officials to make correct calls?

  6. George Brett says:

After watching the video I can’t see how it could be 64 yards. There is no question that Seebass’s kick was further than both Dempsey and Elams even if we’re talking about a a foot. In fact, Dempsey’s kick wasn’t a full 63 yards because that ball was spotted a tad short of the hash mark where Elams was spotted right about the front side of the hash mark. But Seebass’s was spotted about 6 inches behind the hash mark so if we’re talking inches, SeeBass undoubtedly has the record all to himself.

  7. Rick says:

No matter what these new kickers do Jason Elam will always beat them by half a foot!

    • Rick says:

Oops! Senior moment, I meant Tom Dempsey will always beat them by half a foot. Not Jason Elam, it is Dempsey that only has half a right foot. Excuuuuuuuuse Me!
