The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents approved funding for renovations to suites at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Thursday.

The renovations, which would include all of the suites on the east side of the stadium, the Kerr McGee Stadium Club, and the Santee Lounge on the west side of the stadium would cost approximately $950,000 to complete.

The plan is to begin the project in the summer of 2012, but the renovations are not scheduled to be completed until before the 2013 football season.

The east side suites and Kerr McGee Stadium Club were added in the last stadium renovation, which included the east side upper deck, back before the 2004 season. All together, Oklahoma has spent more than $125 million on stadium improvements since 1998.

Built in 1923, Oklahoma Memorial Stadium has become one of the greatest settings in college football over the years. Coming into the 2012 season, the Sooners have won 41 of their past 42 home games. The Sooners’ longest winning streak at home, 39 games, was broken by Texas Tech in an inexplicable loss on Oct. 22, 2012.

The stadium has an official capacity of just over 82,000 people, but the top 10 crowds in stadium history are all well over 85,000. The top five attendance games have all come in the last three seasons, including the top crowd, which was last season against Texas A&M. 85,709 fans packed the stadium to witness the Sooners defeat the Aggies 41-25.

Unfortunately, they also saw the end of NCAA career reception leader Ryan Broyles’ career. The senior wide receiver tore his ACL in the third quarter of the game.
