About an hour ago, CBS reported that legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has passed away. This information has been deemed inaccurate, according to a report by Paterno’s son, Scott, about an hour ago.

Scott tweeted: “CBS report is wrong-Dad is alive but in serious condition. We continue to ask for prayers & privacy.”

Another son, Jay, said that his father is “continuing to fight.”

Paterno family spokesman Dan McGinn released the following statement to the Associated Press earlier today: “Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications. His doctors have now characterized his status as serious. His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

The bottom line is that Paterno, 85, is in very serious condition in the hospital. He is suffering from lung cancer and has been in the hospital since January 13th with minor complications from health treatments. Paterno is also recovering from a broken pelvis.

Paterno had recorded 409 victories as the head coach for the Penn State football team, an all-time NCAA Division I record. But he had been dismissed from his head coaching duties in November, following arguably the worst scandal in the history of sports.
