PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The city can finally take a long needed sigh of relief. Among a few rambunctious decisions in the last few weeks the Philadelphia 76ers finally made a wise decision dealing with their roster.

The Sixers announced early this morning that they have waived center Darryl Watkins. Watkins was originally acquired through a three-team trade last Wednesday made between the Sixers, New Orleans Hornets, and Golden State Warriors.

The Sixers seized Watkins and Dorell Wright in the trade while sending the rights to international player, Edin Bavcic, to the Hornets while guard Jarrett Jack was sent to the Warriors.

Watkins wasn’t necessarily the best trade for the franchise, he was virtually another Tony Battie of the bench just with less talent.

The 6’11, 258lb big man signed a 10-day contract with the Hornets last season. After only appearing in five games, Watkins only averaged 4.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in 19.6 minutes of play. Also in 14 career games throughout two seasons between Sacramento and New Orleans, Watkins averaged 2.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 12.0 minutes per game.

The Paterson, NJ, native doesn’t really bring much versatility to the frontcourt. His height and weight advantages allows him to bully some lackluster post players in the league, however not enough skill to play with the big boys.

When Philadelphia fans were informed on the Syracuse center coming to the Wells Fargo Center, hysteria broke loose on the internet. Between social media and lively forum discussion Watkins’ ability to play the game had become more than questionable within hours.

Watkins has gone from being waived by the Sacramento Kings, to playing overseas and even the D-League before playing in his small stretch with the Hornets last season.

After reviewing the Sixers’ roster, Watkins was released and space re-added to the depth chart at center. In an off-season full of mishaps and questionable mistakes the Philadelphia franchise finally pulled the right strings and wisely waived Watkins.
