With virtually no competition in the East, excluding the Boston Celtics, the Heat cruised through the Eastern Conference in the last two years. Then came the 4-team trade which landed the all-star big man, Andrew Bynum, in Philadelphia.
This could potentially pose a threat to the boys bragged about by South Beach.
Looking at the Heat’s championship run in the last year, the didn’t face any prevalent big man at the center position. This allowed the likes of Lebron James and Dwayne Wade to slash and cut into the paint. When playing the New York Knicks and the likes of Tyson Chandler, the Heat faced a defensive powerhouse but no offensive to complement that effort.
The only other center that showed an issue during the run was the Oklahoma City Thunder‘s, Kendrick Perkins. The effort from Perkins seemed to be the same problem that New York faced, the offense wasn’t run through him, and even worse he doesn’t contribute on the offensive end on a consistent basis to pose a threat. When cruising to the lane the Heat shot over 50 percent in the finals.
However the change is lingering on South Broad Street. Bynum is the biggest problem to face the Miami Heat since all-star big man, Dirk Nowitzki. To compare the two; both are over 7 feet tall, both are capable offensive big man either in the low post or the mid-range, both can give a double-double performance (points & rebounds) on any given night, and looking at the post-season, Bynum will be added to list of those who stopped Lebron.
Even though there are concerns about Bynum’s knee, the giant New Jersey born powerhouse will make the biggest belly flop of a splash in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers may not be a championship contending team now, and not putting their skill-set over the Celtics nor the Heat, but Lebron now has a bigger obstacle to get around then ever before.
