The Giants Are The Real Rivalry For The Eagles, Not The Cowboys
I have always thought that the New York Giants are the premier rivalry of the Philadelphia Eagles. The geographical proximity, the shear competitiveness and great dislike between the two franchises are headline material. The Dallas Cowboys are indeed, hated, but I feel their natural rivalry is with the Washington Redskins. Cowboys vs Indians, baby.
Geography plays a large role. The fact is, Philadelphia does not like New York (I know the Giants are in the Meadowlands…..they are still New York to us). Face it, Philadelphia is in the shadows of the Big Apple. In reality, Philadelphia is considered a second-rate city comparably. So, Philadelphians have a ‘little man’ complex when it comes to New York. I can admit this and still believe that our city is better. Philadelphia is actually accessible, not daunting by shear size.
The Eagles and Giants are division foes with a long lineage of great games, including the playoffs. Over the last ten years, the match-up became more heated because both teams are typically playoff bound. Meeting twice a year, they usually play close, physical games. Lately, the Birds have had the edge.
Eagles fans love traveling to the Meadowlands, egging every Giant fan on. That is what we do. Eagles fans love being in the national spotlight…..especially when it is positive (believe it or not). We are starved for attention. New York gets plenty of it. We are hungry for a Super Bowl championship. New York has celebrated one recently.
This Sunday’s match-up is unusually early in the schedule. The hype is not what it normally is, but it will be there in week 11, unless one team has a collapse.
The Cowboys are old news. That rivalry peaked in the 1980′s-early 1990s. The Giants have moved up the latter. One thing is for sure, the Eagles fans can not wait to boo Eli Manning. Nor, can I.
