Forget the Gordie Howe Hat Trick, Danny Briere of the Flyers has the Briere Trick
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Ottawa Senators in the first half of a home and home in overtime yesterday 3-2, but the big story was the fact Danny Briere had a hat trick and fight.
The Briere Trick will now be used to refer to a player who scores a hat trick and also has a fight during the game. I cannot claim the term The Briere Trick, that credit has to go to George Pappas Jr., of PuckingHockey.com, who posted it on Facebook yesterday.
Danny B had himself a game to remember that helped lift his team. “It was an inspiring effort by Danny,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said.
“He was skating and in the battles and got knocked around. He was taking some and giving some. He has to be willing to take that from some big guys. You watch a guy like that, and I know it was a couple of skill guys, but Danny is not a big guy, he’s a flyweight. But he gave our guys a lift, and he had a monster game.”
This was Danny’s first fight since November 20, 2009, Briere said, “It was a cheap shot on (Kyle Turris’) part, he came down with a crosscheck to the back of my head when I was in a vulnerable position on the ice, he scraped my face on the ice and there was a lot of frustration there. After that, I took the adrenaline and used it. I didn’t think I got a fair shot and I felt I had to do something about it.”
After the fight Briere would to score the tying goal in the third and the game winner with :06 left in OT. This is his fifth career hat trick.
The Flyers will take on the Senators again today 5:00 PM in the second part of the home and home.
