It’s been a rough summer for the Philadelphia Flyers.

They’ve watched a couple of big offensive pieces leave, both through trade and free agency, and saw their massive offer sheet to Shea Weber matched by the Nashville Predators. The news on Tuesday didn’t help matters much.

Andrej Meszaros is very likely done for the year, after undergoing surgery to repair a torn Achilles that he suffered during offseason training. That injury has left the Flyers with a big hole in an already thin blue line.

Inevitably, it’s going to lead to some trade discussion, starting with Keith Yandle. But the other big name that is going to be connected to the Flyers is P.K. Subban, who has already been discussed as a potential option for this team.

Subban is a restricted free agent, without a new deal from the Montreal Canadiens. There are reports that the Habs offered him a two-year contract, but so far nothing has been agreed to. You have to figure there are teams out there that could be interested in sending him an offer sheet.

And the Flyers would certainly fit the bill as one of those clubs. Not only are they in dire need of some help in the blue line, Subban is a potential star on defense. His numbers last season included 36 points, with over 100 hits and 100 blocked shots on the season. Not only would he replace Meszaros in the physical game, but he’d be a massive upgrade offensively.

We’ve already seen the Flyers throw a huge offer sheet out there for a defenseman this summer, so you know they’re serious about upgrading. Offer sheeting Subban wouldn’t cost nearly as much, in terms of years, money, or draft picks.

Even before Meszaros went down, this was a move that would have made plenty of sense for the Flyers. The fact that Meszaros went down just creates an even bigger need for a defenseman, unless the Flyers plan to roll with Bruno Gervais or a youngster on the blue line.

The longer P.K. Subban goes without a contract, the more likely it could become that the Flyers would be willing to try and make a run at him. If they weren’t considering it before, I’d bet that the Meszaros injury could end up swaying them just enough to send that offer sheet.
