With Suns news few and fair between the last several months, the organization made some big noise on Monday afternoon. Former Dial CEO Brad Casper was named the Suns new president by owner Robert Sarver, replacing Rick Welts who left for the same job in Golden State.

Jason Rowley has been the organization’s interim president ever since Welts left. Rowley, a former legal counsel, will now be the Suns chief operating officer.

Here is some more information on Casper from Suns beat writer at the Arizona Republic, Paul Coro.

Casper, 51, spent 16 years with Procter & Gamble Co., including nine years in Japan, China and Hong Kong, before becoming president of another consumer goods company, Church and Dwight Co., in 2001. He was recruited to the Dial CEO job in 2005 after it had been acquired by German conglomerate Henkel AG and he led the opening of a new Scottsdale headquarters in 2008.

Casper resigned from Dial in August 2010 and said his first support came from the Suns, who invited his family to the outdoor preseason game in Palm Desert, Calif. Since then, Casper has been involved as an adviser and board member to several multi-million dollar companies and took over Jerry Colangelo’s role as director at Grand Canyon University, a Suns marketing partner.

Looking at Casper’s resume, it is extremely impressive. He has experience at a number of different companies in many different sectors of business. He may not have the experience running a basketball business, but it isn’t that much different than running any other business.
Replacing Welts won’t be easy though. He was one of most respected and well liked people in the entire league according to his peers. Hiring the former Suns presient was a brilliant move by the Golden State organization and should pay off immediately.
Casper will have some big shoes to fill. Hopefully he will be up to the task.
