The Detroit Lions are one of the hottest teams in football right now after a 5-1 start and appear to be ready for a strong run at their first playoff appearance since the 1999 season. Unfortunately, there’s a chance the Lions may have to make that run without their top running back–Jahvid Best.

The second-year running back suffered his second concussion of the season last weekend against the San Francisco 49ers and missed practice again on Thursday–leaving plenty of concern that Best could miss a significant amount of time away from the football field. In fact, according to Mike Freeman of CBS Sports, Best’s situation is so bad–there are some people advising him to strongly consider waiting until 2012 to play again.

From Freeman:

People close to Detroit runner Jahvid Best are expressing concern to him that he needs to strongly consider sitting out the year, I’m told. Best suffered his second concussion of the season this past week. He was forced to miss the final four games of his college career due to concussion-like symptoms.

Obviously, concussions are the type of injury that needs to be taken serious and Best can’t afford to suffer another one considering he’s already dealt with two over the first six games. Detroit already needs all of the help they can get with their ground game as they rank 25th in the NFL by averaging just 90.8 rushing yards per game–so the loss of Best would be devastating for one of the league’s most dangerous offenses.
