With Jason Campbell most likely out for the remainder of the year with a broken collarbone, the Oakland Raiders pulled off arguably the biggest trade of the 2011 season after acquiring Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals right before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Obviously, this move shows Hue Jackson and the Raiders are focusing on winning now instead of worrying about the future, but the move still came as a surprise for Campbell–who found out about the trade while recovering in the hospital.

ESPN reported on Sunday that Campbell spoke to a Bay Area radio station on Friday and discussed how the Raiders kept him out of the loop on the Palmer deal.  In fact, Campbell found out about the trade from watching television in the hospital while recovering from his recent surgery.

There’s no question Palmer is a huge upgrade over Kyle Boller or Terrelle Pryor, but the move obviously has Campbell concerned about his future in Oakland and he still seems kind of shocked about everything that has happened over the last week.

From ESPN’s article:

“On Sunday night I had some pain pills for my shoulder, so I was pretty much sleeping all night Sunday,” Campbell said. “And then Monday I had my surgery, so I was pretty much out of it then.”

Campbell said he was watching TV a day later with his fiancée when the Raiders’ news conference to announce the trade was aired, with Palmer sitting alongside Jackson.

“I was halfway still on pain medicine,” Campbell said. “It was kind of a moment of silence. My fiancée looked at me to see if I was gonna say something. There’s different things that go through your mind but you don’t want to fill your mind with those thoughts.”

Palmer had traveled to Oakland, and on Tuesday morning he underwent a physical before the Raiders officially acquired him that afternoon from the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I started receiving these text messages and everything about, you know, ‘Hey what’s going on?’ and ‘There’s been a trade’ and everything, and ‘They’ve just given up a first round,’ ” Campbell said of the Bengals’ compensation in the deal, which will come during the 2012 draft.

Considering how much the Raiders were willing to give up to acquire Palmer, it’s clear Hue Jackson and company are willing to do whatever it takes to make sure the team continues to build off their impressive 4-2 start. Unfortunately, the NFL is still a business at the end of the day and it looks like Oakland plans on having Palmer be their new quarterback for the next few seasons–which means Campbell may have to look elsewhere if he wants to be a starter in 2012.
