NFL Rumors: David Wilson May Not Back Up Ahmad Bradshaw for New York Giants
Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

When the New York Giants selected runningback David Wilson from Virginia Tech with the 32nd pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the assumption was he would come in and be Ahmad Bradshaw‘s backup right away. At first I was skeptical, considering even the best of Jerry Reese‘s first round picks didn’t see the field right away. They had to earn their way to the field by showing up in practice and putting in the work.

I got less of the impression this would happen to Wilson when the coaching staff raved about him during OTAs and mini-camp. Kevin Gilbride talked mostly about his explosiveness.

“It looks like there is something that can give you some excitement,” Gilbride said. “I don’t know if we have had that kind of guy. Tiki [Barber] was a tremendous all-around back. Brandon gave you a certain [physicality], Ahmad gives the toughness. But this guy has the kind of explosion that I’m not sure how many guys in the league have.”

Despite all of that praise, Wilson started with the third team offense on the first day of camp, last on the depth chart in terms of how many reps he got. It is clear the Giants are fine with bringing him along slowly, at least until he understands the offense and can protect the passer.

Coughlin and Gilbride trusted D.J. Ware enough last year to give him as many snaps as Brandon Jacobs, especially on third downs. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Ware the primary backup for the first few weeks of the season. Also do not forget about 7th round pick from 2011 Da’Rel Scott, who has blazing speed and could surprise some people in camp.

Either way, it is going to be interesting to watch this battle play out in camp.
