Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, was found dead Sunday morning in his room at the Eagles training camp at Lehigh University.  Garrett Reid had been assisting the Eagles’ strength coaches at training camp

Lehigh University Chief of Police Edward Schupp said a 911 call was made at 7:20 a.m., and that Garrett Reid was already deceased when the police arrived at the dormotory.  According to Schupp, there were no suspicious activities.

Coach Reid was not present at the Eagles’ Sunday morning’s practice.  Eagles general manager Howie Roseman told reporters that Reid requested that the team to go forward with training camp.

“I have some heartbreaking news to share with you all,”  Roseman said in a press conference that was streamed on the team’s web site. “It is with great sadness that I tell you Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Coach Reid, was found dead this morning in his room here at training camp. This is a tough morning for all us.”

Players gathered together for a team prayer before the morning walk-through began, and were told not to speak to reporters afterward.

Garrett Reid had been in numerous scrapes with the law in the past.  He was sentenced to 23 months in prison in November, 2007 for crashing into another motorist while high on heroin. His younger brother Britt received 22 months in the prison, as well as probation.  He was also sentenced to two years in a state drug rehabilitation program after being caught with 89 prescription pills inside his rectum at the Montgomery County Prison. He was in the county prison on charges related to a January 2007 car crash that seriously injured a woman.

Andy Reid took a five-week leave of absence form the Eagles in February, 2007 to deal with issues surrounding his sons.

When he was sentenced, Garrett Reid had said, “I don’t want to be that kid who was the son of the head coach of the Eagles, who was spoiled and on drugs and OD’d and just faded into oblivion.”

We at Rant Sports send our deepest sympathies out to Coach Reid, his family, the Eagles players and coaches, and all members their organization.

Garrett Reid was 29.
