UPDATE: McKinnie has actually agreed to a new contract with the Ravens. Not sure why he thought he was gone, but whatever I guess.
Bryant McKinnie has been one of the better left tackles in football since he entered the league. However, it appears that he is going to need a new team. According to his Twitter account, the Baltimore Ravens have cut the long time veteran just before the season is supposed to begin.
Nothing has been officially confirmed as that tweet could go about 15 different directions. However, it seems pretty straight forward. The Ravens told McKinnie that he could announce his release first and their Twitter account then confirmed the news.
This might be a story to keep an eye on. It could be a simple thing that has nothing to do with a release, especially because the timing is so odd. What team cuts a starter with less than a week until the regular season starts? Maybe they did it as a favor to Bryant McKinnie but I have no idea how to process this move.
The Ravens are projected to be one of the teams that contends for the Super Bowl this season, but I do not think moves like this are the right way to accomplish that goal. If this move is true, it could help them in the long run but there are certainly short term issues right now.
There is also the chance that McKinnie has retired, which would really put the Ravens in a bind. Kind of odd to see a guy walk out right before the season.
