The Chargers need to reestablish their dominance against the AFC West
The San Diego Chargers had a combined record of 20-4 against AFC West opponents from 2006-2009, and won the division in all of these seasons. In 2010 and 2011, the Chargers had a combined record of 6-6 against their division. Kansas City won the AFC West in 2010 with a 10-6 record and a 2-4 record against divisional opponents. San Diego finished 2010 at 9-7 with a 3-3 record against the AFC West. Denver won the division in 2011 with an 8-8 overall record and a 3-3 record in the division. The Chargers finished 2011 with an 8-8 record and a 3-3 record in the division as well, but lost the West due to a tiebreaker scenario.
In 2010, the Lightning Bolts lost their season opener in Kansas City by a final score of 21-14. In week five, San Diego lost a road game against Oakland 35-27. San Diego led this game 24-22 going into the fourth quarter. In 2011, the Chargers lost a week eight overtime game in Kansas City 23-20. San Diego had the ball with 1:03 left in the fourth, but Philip Rivers fumbled the ball on the Chiefs’ 15 yard line. The Chargers lost a week 10 match-up at home against the Raiders by a final score of 24-17. San Diego lost a week 12 overtime game at home to the Broncos 16-13 after leading 13-10 going into the fourth. Nick Novak missed a field goal in overtime, and Matt Prater connected for Denver to get the victory.
If one goes back in time, San Diego also went 5-1 against their division during the 2004 season, so they were 5-1 against the West in each of their last five playoff appearances. The Chargers combined to have a 10-2 record at home and on the road against the West from 2006-2009, but they were just 3-3 at home and on the road in 2010 and 2011. It is difficult to duplicate the type of success San Diego had in 2004 and 2006-2009, but a 4-2 record against the West in 2012 would be great for the Chargers.
